The Painted Wall at Sunset 1
Black Canyon of the Gunnison NP
The Painted Wall in the Black Canyon of the Gunnison is one of the most beautiful areas of this national park. The cliffs are the highest in Colorado at 2,250’ from the river to the top of the wall. While the canyon is mostly comprised of gneiss, the painted strokes are made of large bands of a different rock called pegmatite that cross the face of the cliffs. The rocks in these cliffs is approximately 2 billion years old. Far below the Gunnison River can be seen winding its way through the canyon towards the Pacific Ocean. Photo © copyright by Rob Greebon.
