King Lake near Winter Park, Colorado 1
At the end of Rollins Pass (as far as you can drive), a trail takes you over a small ridge and down to the blue waters of King Lake. While this lake stays frozen well into summer, the Colorado wildflowers that grow on its slopes provide a burst of color anyone who follows the trail far enough. The road to this point from Highway 40 and Winter Park is about 15 miles to the trailhead, and you’d probably want a 4WD as it is rough near the top. Still, the landscape from this elevation is well worth the bumpy trip. Photo © copyright by Rob Greebon.
